The Philadelphia Eagles are in the Super Bowl this weekend, prompting the viral resurgence of photographs of Princess Diana wearing an Eagles varsity jacket. While researching the story of why she sported that jacket we stumbled upon other images of her wearing a red and black varsity jacket. Naturally here at Peaches and Bulldogs we are partial to the red and black jacket featuring University of Georgia colors!
While we personally prefer the red and black varsity jacket, we were still curious about the story of the Philadelphia Eagles varsity jacket. According to Harper’s Bazaar, the tale of the varsity jacket traces back to the 1982 funeral of Princess Grace of Monaco, a Philadelphia native. At the funeral Princess Diana spoke to fellow attendee Jack Edelstein, a statistician and spotter for the Eagles radio network, During their conversation they spoke about the Philadelphia Eagles, the logo and the team colors. News of this conversation got back to the Philadelphia Eagles team owner and he sent her a custom jacket
The Eagles jacket had nothing to do with allegiance, but everything to do with aesthetic. She just liked the look.
